Storm Darragh wreaks havoc in the village but highlights Drimpton's resilient community spirit.

The village of Drimpton was left without power for approximately 10 hours following the fierce winds and torrential rain brought by Storm Darragh. Fallen trees and widespread damage kept The National Grid team working overtime to restore electricity to the area.

Here at the Village Hall, the storm caused significant disruption when the dugout shelters were uprooted and displaced. Long-serving groundskeeper Tony Francis commented on the damage: “The shelters were put in years ago when Drimpton FC gained promotion to the Premiership by two club members who were builders.

The shelters were found deposited in the hedge behind the dwarf wall they were originally supported on. In an email to the committee, Chris Beck reported: “Storm Darragh seems to have deposited them into the hedge behind. The dwarf wall the wooden structure is supported on has split along the mortar line and so should be fairly easy to repair.”

The committee is now deliberating the best course of action to restore the shelters to their former state.

Beyond the Village Hall, the storm caused widespread disruption. Gardens were rearranged, fences were toppled, and trees came down. Many residents were forced to make alternative dinner plans amidst power outages. For those seeking warmth and community, Steve at The Royal Oak offered refuge with an open fire, candlelit drinks, and games, creating a much-needed space to relax and connect during the challenging time. Meanwhile, the village’s WhatsApp News group became a hub of mutual support for those with mobile signals, with residents sharing updates and offering help where needed.

In true Drimpton fashion, the storm has become a reminder of the strength and camaraderie of the village.
